Cycle for Change: How Johnson Fitness is Redefining Fitness With Purpose

Cycle for Change: How Johnson Fitness is Redefining Fitness With Purpose | johnsonfitness.co.za

At Johnson Fitness, we’ve always believed that talk means little without action. Cycle for Change has been our way of proving it, pedal by pedal.

We asked our Johnson Health Tech SA MD, Zeyd Sulaiman, what Cycle for Change really achieved. “We wanted sweat to mean something after the music stopped,” he told us. Picture Workshop 17 at the V&A: instructors hyping, teams rotating, cameras rolling.

That energy has already moved the needle toward a permanent indoor cycling studio at Velokhaya in Khayelitsha so young riders can train where it matters most: close to home.

Why the Model Works for Business and Community

Corporate teams showed up with focus and a bit of healthy rivalry. The result? A tangible kit, trained legs and a studio that catalyses daily discipline.

That matters in a world where 4 in 5 adolescents don’t meet recommended activity levels, according to the World Health Organization. Facilities on their doorstep change the odds.

Sulaiman’s Moment that Set the Course

“My wake-up call was riding a stage race past an under-resourced community,” he said.

“We were on high-end bikes, cheered wholeheartedly by people who would not comprehend the cost of the equipment I was using. It didn’t sit right. If one bike can shift a life, imagine a room full—day after day.” That thought sharpened Sulaiman’s brief: fund infrastructure, not just an event.

What Cycle for Change Has Delivered

  • A professionally produced spinathon powered by Matrix at Workshop17, with Cape Town’s top instructors, hosted by Liezel van der Westhuizen and Nic Dlamini.
  • Corporate packages placed teams on the bikes and an NGO team on the start list, so participation and empowerment rose together.
  • Each team effectively funded a Matrix indoor cycle that forms part of the Khayelitsha studio.
  • Sponsor recognition that lasts longer than a finish-line selfie (yes, we definitely took those too).

Why Indoor Cycling Was The Right Bet

Indoor cycling scales well, teaches pacing and builds aerobic capacity. Evidence from a peer-reviewed study shows indoor cycling can improve aerobic fitness, blood pressure, lipid profile and body composition – useful outcomes when you’re building a long-term habit.

What Comes Next for Corporate?

“We’re builders,” he said. “We build gyms, partnerships and habits. Cycle for Change has helped us get closer to our goal of a permanent, well-used studio where coaches mentor consistently and kids learn grit alongside cadence.”

The story doesn’t end when the music stops. The brands that make the biggest difference are those that stay in touch, ask how the studio’s running and come back to ride or mentor.

Cycle for Change has shown that a sponsored pedal can become brick-and-mortar progress. If your brand cares about health equity and real community impact, keep the chain turning.
